in came edge about, massachusetts, a chechen, apparently. dzhokhar tsarnaev. tell us what you know. >> 19 years old from overseas, been in the u.s. for more than a year. both suspects said to be brothers. as we watch that. i want to make one last point here, if i could, come out live here to our location on boylston street. i want the audience to understand just how easy it would have been for these two people to simply walk away from the scene. runners were coming down eastbound here on boylston street. the explosions are dropped at quarter mile down the street. both bombers are walking west on boylston street. it's an easy thing to duck into gloucester or newberry street or com avenue and then cross the river, which is only a quarter mile away and that takes you to the intersection of vasser and main, which is where police were called in last night at 10:30 p.m. after the report of a robbery at a local convenience station. that's really -- that seems to be the best tip yet that we have gotten, to notify authorities that these guys were in the area and they were the people that the f.b
callum. the authorities were thinking they may not be able to question dzhokhar tsarnaev, suspect in case. there is reports of throat wound, they thought might be self-inflicted after his brother was killed in a shoot without with police. bill: mike tobin leads our coverage back in boston. the latest on that we can report on the investigation is what, mike? good morning there? >> reporter: the latest we can report from this investigation what lead authorities to the brother. that appears to be mountains and mountains of security video. the justice department spoke with our producer mike levine, they looked at security video. this is video not yet been released. don't get confused by what you see on the screen. you see people react to the blast. most people turn in the direction of the blast. the tsnaraev brothers do not. that set up red flags. that got law enforcement zeroing on the two brothers. bill: mike, we're trying to piece this together as best we can but what can you tell us about the reports that the fbi is questioning him today from his hospital bed? >> reporter: all of that goe
is alive, dzhokhar tsarnaev, 19 years old, a resident of cambridge is being sought. his brother was killed last night in the interaction with police, tamerlan tsarnaev who was 26 years old. it all started last night in cambridge. there was a shootout with an officer at m.i.t. on the m.i.t. campus. that officer having been killed last night, found dead in his police cruiser. the suspects then reportedly carjacked an suv, and a chase ensued. at one point they did release the driver unharmed. they went into watertown which is just outside of cambridge, about 10, 15 minutes outside of cambridge and that's where there was a shootout with police. by 1:30 a.m., the first suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was dead and the second suspect was on the loose and being chased. this morning at about 5:00 a.m. police shut down the mbta. they have also now seen the shutdown of amtrak between boston and providence, a major shutdown. ed davis, commissioner of police, says this is a major man hunt. >> overall at this hour we've seen a lot of activity. they have surrounded the home in cambridge of the suspects where b
tsarnaev is dead. suspect number two, dzhokhar tsnaraev, his younger brother, age 19, still unaccounted for. jennifer griffin is live with our national security view on this from our bureau in washington, d.c. we're told they have ties to chechnya. that they could be russian- born but chechnya according to their ethnicity. they spent some time there at least at a younger age, jennifer. what more do we have on that? >> reporter: that is really interesting. when i heard of the name of the younger one, the one with the white cap who is still on the loose, the name dzhokar was very familiar to me. the dzhokar dudivey first president of chechnya was killed. had a violent death by the russians when he used his satellite phone, two missiles came out of the sky and killed him. i remember being in lebanon at the time and remember when he was killed, he was killed in chechnya on april 21st, which of course is coming up this weekend, this sunday. that made me think if these two are chechen nationalists in some way, dzhokar dudiav, dzhokhar tsnaraev accused of planting the boston marathon bomb, that is
purchased, about the video surveillance that led them to dzhokhar tsarnaev, and the purpose is to show the evidence that they have against this guy, and they're going to lay some, but not all, of that out in the fbi affidavit. >> mike, precisely, specifically, what is he likely to be charged with? >> reporter: well, it's going to be terrorism-relatinged charges, and that could include a charge for use of weapons of mass destruction. the ied bombs will be, can fit under that section of the federal code, and that -- that and these other charges could -- would lead to the death penalty, if convicted. doesn't mean that the federal government will seek the death penalty, but these charges could result in the death penalty. we won't know whether the justice department is seeking the death penalty from this criminal complaint charge today. that will come much later. >> let's talk about the wound to the throat we're starting to hear about. that apparently has prevented him from being able to speak. how are interrogators going to get around this? just a simple, they ask questions and he writes
